6 Things to Know About Road De-icer

With winter comes the annoying buildup of snow and ice on the road, affecting traffic and making driving conditions dangerous. Heavy snowfall limits visibility and it becomes a precarious situation for those out on the roads, trying to get to their destination. Both walking and driving are dangerous when the roads are covered in ice and snow and no liquid de-icer have been used.

They are slippery and wet, and often cause accidents. All through the winter, the northern latitudes deal with the problems that come with the cold weather. This is why the liquid de icer exists.

Here are six things you should know about liquid de-icer:

1. It can save time and money

De-icing is the process of removing ice and snow from a surface. It is usually done with the help of a chemical liquid. Shoving snow and ice is a long and laborious process, so de-icing is a more professional and time efficient method.

The purpose of a liquid de-icer is to melt the snow and ice. It is usually used for larger areas where shoving the snow is difficult. Snow and ice management professionals are the ones who perform this process.

On the contrary, anti-icing involves applying a de-icer to the surface before it starts to snow in order to prevent the formation of ice or snow.

2. It is more effective than salt

The reason why professional snow and ice management personnel use liquid de-icer instead of salt is because it works better.

Salt takes longer to work, and when used as anti-icing, it can get wiped out by vehicles and footsteps even before it gets time to work. Liquids get absorbed instantly and cannot get wiped out by anything. Salt is also terrible for steel in cars.

3. It is cost efficient

Liquid road de-icer is needed in a small quantity compared to other de-icing substances. Besides, liquid de-icer penetrates the surface of the pavement, and remains there for a long time. This eliminates the need to apply the liquid over and over again, reducing cost and material wastage.

4. It reduces plowing time

When the de-icer is applied before it starts to snow, the material penetrates the pores of the surface and spreads over the area.

This reduces the time required to plow the snow and ice when it finally does snow. It is also better for traffic movements, which don’t have to remain congested because of heaps of snow and ice on the streets.

5. It is applied according to ground temperature

For the de-icer to be most effective, it should be applied according to the temperature of the ground, not of the air.

Although regular thermometers can be used, they should be able to properly read the temperature of the ground because there is often a lot of difference between the temperature of the ground and that of the air.

6. Liquids can be used together with solids

Although liquid de-icers are very effective in preventing the formation of snow and ice, they aren’t the only solution.

Solid de-icer can also be used along with liquids to help with the anti-icing process. But any kind of liquid de-icer should only be used by professionals.
